SOUTHFEILD (WWJ) - A pungent odor permeating the air in Southfield has stumped residents and officials as the source of the peculiar smell remains unidentified Wednesday morning.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the area of 9 Mile and Greenfield where the mysterious aroma hung in the air for several hours.

"If you just take a whiff of the air, it smells like something's burning," Langton said.

What's even more peculiar, Langton added, is that police and fire officials can't figure out where the smell is coming from.

The Southfield Fire Department was out in the area earlier investigating, but have turned up empty-handed. No reports of injures have been made, only the smell hangs in the air.

According to Langton, the mystery has people asking "what's going on?"

There are apartment complexes and a few high-rise commercial buildings in the immediate area, but nothing obvious, like a structure fire, can be seen, Langton said.

The odor is described as burning wood or burning leaves.

"Nobody can find what the smell is," Langton added. "It's kind of weird."
