FedEx semi truck loses control, overturns on I-275 ramp to I-96, car slams into trailer

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) – A major crash involving a rolled-over FedEx truck in Farmington Hills has cleared after more than five hours.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to Michigan State Police, when the truck rolled over on the northbound I-275 ramp to westbound I-96.

MSP officials say the driver was going too fast for road conditions, as snow and falling temperatures made for treacherous conditions across Metro Detroit Monday night.

The driver lost control and hit the left guardrail, causing the empty trailer to disconnect and turn onto its side. A passenger car then slammed into the trailer, causing minor damage.

No injuries were reported in the crash.

Officials say one of the truck’s fuel tanks was ruptured in the crash, spilling about 40 gallons of diesel fuel onto the ramp.

“No matter how big the vehicle or if it is a four wheel drive, drivers need to drive at a speed that is appropriate for the road conditions.” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X, formerly Twitter. “Remember, weather does not cause crashes, risky driving behavior does.”

The crash finally cleared at 10:40 p.m.

The crash happened the same night a reported 30-40 cars were involved in a pileup crash on Telegraph Road in Redford Township.
