ROYAL OAK (WWJ) A Royal Oak High School student died over the holiday while saving a person from drowning, school officials said.
Paul Sanders, a freshman, died on January 4th during holiday break.
“Although this is a sad time, Paul’s family wants you to know that Paul passed away as a hero," Principal Sharida Lewis said in a letter addressed to families.
Paul drowned while saving someone who had fallen into a frozen pond, Lewis said.
Paul’s brother— Romal, a sophomore at Royal Oak High School— tried to rescue his brother.
“(Romal) fought for Paul’s life which allowed Paul to be taken to the hospital for doctors to assist him,” Lewis said.
Paul and Romal’s mother, Jessica Sanders, has started a GoFundMe. Donors have already given more than $18,500.
“To know Paul is to love Paul,” Sanders wrote on the page. “His smile was always the brightest in any room. His joy was unshakeable.”
She said the money will go toward Paul’s memorial, but it will also be used to expand access to organized sports training for underprivileged kids.
Sports was one of Paul’s passions, Sanders said.
Grief counselors, social workers and psychologists will be on hand for students, staff and families, school officials said.
“(Paul) was selfless, understood the value of giving one’s best efforts and always supported others when they needed it…” Sanders wrote about her son. “We thank Paul for the countless lessons he taught us during his 15 years and we thank God for blessing all of us with the gift of Paul.”
