(WWJ) — An investigation is ongoing after a young man who had driven out to help his friend change a tire on the side of the freeway near Saginaw was hit and killed by another driver.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 along southbound I-75 near Baker Road, according to Michigan State Police.

A 22-year-old Saginaw man had driven to the scene in Bridgeport Township — just southeast of Saginaw — to help his friend change the flat tire, according to MSP.

He was in between his car and his friend’s on the shoulder when an 80-year-old Bay City man driving a Chevy pickup truck crashed into the two cars.

The Saginaw man was rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.

MSP officials say the Bay City man was also taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. There were no injuries reported to the Saginaw man's friend.

Officials are not sure what caused the man to crash into the other cars. The incident remains under investigation.

Authorities did not say whether the elderly driver may face any charges in connection with the crash.

MSP troopers were assisted at the scene by MSP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, MSP Aviation, Bridgeport Fire & Police Departments, Buena Vista Police Department and MMR.
