Saginaw county teen dies three days after receiving second dose of COVID-19 vaccine

SAGINAW COUNTY (WWJ) A Saginaw County teen died three days after receiving his second dose COVID-19 vaccine.

The Health Department reported the 13-year-old's death to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) for further investigation only because of how recently he had received the vaccine.

The CDC is currently investigating if his death, which was the reported to the Medical Examiner on June 17, was in any way connected to the vaccine.

The Saginaw County Health Department did not release any more details on whether the teen had any other health conditions that would put him at an increased risk for sudden or early death.

They also did not specify whether he received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

Health officials say there is no proof that his death was a direct result of receiving the vaccine, and even if so, such cases are "extremely rare."

"Loss of life in an adolescent for any reason is heartbreaking," a release from the Health Department said.

The CDC is investigating heart inflammation in about 13 young adults per every million who received the vaccine, and a CDC safety group says there may be a link. However, the CDC still recommends that anyone 12 and older receive a vaccine, saying the benefits outweigh the risks.

The Michigan COVID-19 Vaccine Dashboard reports nearly 132,000 Michigan residents between 12 and 15 (26%) have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while nearly 498,000 (about 20%) of Michiganders in that age group have received both doses.
