MSP warns public about scam calls claiming to be collecting money for family of trooper killed in Saginaw Co.

(WWJ) - The Michigan State Police are warning people about a scam claiming to be raising money on behalf of the family of a Trooper who died on Wednesday.

MSP Third District Tweeted that people have been reporting phone calls “soliciting funds on behalf of the family of Tpr Popp.”

Michigan State Trooper Joel Popp was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Jan. 24. Popp was assisting other troopers during an investigation into a suspected impaired driver. The driver stopped “in a curved lane of travel,” on northbound I-75 and Birch Run Road in Vienna Township.

Popp was struck by an 81-year-old driver while standing by his patrol vehicle. Two other troopers were also hit.

If you receive a call like this, hang up. The Michigan State Police said they will never call and ask for money.

MSP said the best way to support Popp’s family is by going to https://www.michigan.gov/msp/tpr-joel-popp. The funds are managed by the Michigan State Trooper’s Assistance Fund.
