TROY (WWJ) – Police in Troy are on the lookout for a pair of suspects who tried to scam a woman out of her jewelry.

The incident happened last Thursday at the Charter Square Apartments near Big Beaver and Rochester Roads, according to police.

A woman was out for a walk in the apartment complex around 3:30 p.m. that day when she was approached by a man and woman in a pickup truck.

They told the victim their mother had recently passed away and they were giving away all her gold jewelry and money, police officials said.

That’s when the woman put several “gold” necklaces, bracelets and rings on the victim. She also handed her $80 in cash.

But as she put the jewelry on the victim she “discretely removed the victim's gold jewelry” that she was previously wearing and tried to hide it, according to police.

Officials say the victim realized what had happened and was able to grab her jewelry back. She then ran away and alerted others in the area, officials said.

The suspects fled the area in their truck.

Police did not release a description of the suspects.
