LENOX TWP. (WWJ) -- Detroit police say their search for the body of a missing Eastpointe teen in a Macomb County landfill is over, although many questions remain.

In a very brief statement released Wednesday, the police department announced: "The search for Zion Foster has concluded."

Police did not immediately release any further details, stating that more information will be provided at a press conference next week.

However, it seems unlikely that the teens body has been, or will ever been found. The Macomb Daily reported that the search was called off due to rain and cold weather, and that police were giving up.

Foster, 17, was last seen alive on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, at her home in the 22000 block of Melrose Court, near 9 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue in Eastpointe.

Her cousin says she overdosed and he placed Foster's body in a dumpster. That led police to search the landfill in Lenox Twp., digging for weeks through trash.

The cousin was charged with lying to investigators as part of the investigation.

When the landfill search began back in May, police said that the purpose was to bring closure for Foster's family.

"It's a tremendous undertaking," said Detroit Police Chief James White, "and it's what we want to do. It's the right thing to do."
