FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ) -- Traffic is jammed up on Tuesday along northbound I-75 in Monroe County after a deadly, multi-vehicle crash.
Authorities tell WWJ Newsradio 950 that this crash happened in a construction zone in Frenchtown Township at around 9 a.m., involving a semi truck and road crew vehicles.
According to Michigan State Police, a truck semi carrying aluminum cans crashed into two Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) vehicles.
MDOT crews were patching in the left lane when a work truck directing traffic was rear ended. The semi jacknifed and hit a second MDOT truck.
The truck driver was pronounced dead on scene, and several MDOT workers received minor injuries, police said.
A spokesperson for Monroe County Ambulance said three people were pinned in their vehicles, but only one of those people was injured and was taken to a hospital.
As of 12:30 p.m., I-75 northbound remained closed at I-275 as a result of this crash. Drivers were being forced off the freeway at Nadeau Road.
MSP said investigators are still working to figure out if alcohol or drugs were a factor and if the truck driver was wearing a seatbelt.
