In a statement, Shepler’s President Chris Shepler said he and his brother Billy, who serves as fleet captain, will continue to remain partial owners in the venture that bears their family name.

“Now, at this point in time, this move was right for both the Shepler family and our company,” Shepler said. “Under the new partnership, the current company name and branding will remain the same. Additionally, all cast members will retain their positions.”

Since 2015, Shepler’s has reportedly invested over $13 million in upgrades for the fleet of ferries, and more will likely be needed in the future to meet demand, according to Chris Shepler.

The Shepler family’s origins in the popular northern Michigan vacation destination began when Captain William H. Shepler opened a snack stop catering to Mackinac City tourists in 1945.

Shortly thereafter, Shepler recognized the potential in starting a service to transport tourists to the island, and began doing so by speedboat before eventually transitioning to ferries.

At present time, Shepler’s transports more people to the island during the summer season than any other ferry line.

Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry will celebrate its 78th year in April 2022.
