NOVI (WWJ) -- There's a significant police presence — but authorities say no active threat to the public — after a shooting at a Novi apartment complex on Wednesday.

Novi Police told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the shooting took place just before 10:30 a.m. at the Central Park Estates, located in the 47000 block of Central Park Blvd.

Officers responded to the scene, after a caller confirmed that they reportedly heard as many as nine shots being fired.

Police said 38-year old man was shot twice in the upper arm and took himself to the hospital. His condition at this point is unknown.

Initial indications are that this was an isolated incident between the victim and the shooter, who remained on the loose as of the noon hour.

Because of the incident, as a precaution. Novi schools in the area of the apartment complex were placed into "secure mode." School officials said this means classes continue as normal, while no one was allowed to enter or leave the school buildings.

Witnesses told WWJ that Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital, which isn't far from the shooting scene, was also under a lockdown as a result of the incident.

WWJ is working to get an update on the situation at the hospital.

There is no description of the shooter at this time, as the investigation continues.
