NOVI (WWJ) -- Police are searching for a suspect who fled the scene after shooting at a Novi apartment complex on Wednesday.

Novi Police told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the shooting took place just before 10:30 a.m. at the Central Park Estates, located in the 47000 block of Central Park Blvd.

Officers responded to the scene, after a caller confirmed that they reportedly heard as many as nine shots being fired.

According to police, a 38-year old Detroit man was shot twice in the upper arm and took himself to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Novi Police Commander Bob Man told WWJ's Jon Hewett that the shooter remained on the loose, and that police were actively searching for him.

"We do believe at this time the incident was between two individuals who that know each other, and that there's no known threat to the public at this time," Man said.

There remained a significant police presence in the area through the afternoon.

As a precaution, Novi schools in the area of the apartment complex were placed into "secure mode" for a time during the day. That meant, while classes continued, no one was allowed to leave or enter the school buildings.

Officials confirmed that Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital, which isn't far from the shooting scene, was also under a lockdown as a result of the incident. The lockdown has since been lifted.

There is no description of the shooter at this time, as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Novi Police at 248-348-7100.
