STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A suspect has been arrested in the deadly shooting of a man at a Sterling Heights motel.
Sterling Heights Police said they received a 911 call of shots fired at the Extended Stay America Motel on Van Dyke near 14 Mile— on Saturday, February 1st around 5:30 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found a man dead with a gunshot wound in the parking lot.
The suspect had fled the scene.
According to police, their investigation led them to a home in Center Line. They set up a perimeter around the home on State Park, in the area of Stephens and Van Dyke, as the situation turned into a “barricaded gunman" standoff, they said in a press release.
Warren Police and Center Line Public Safety assisted with the negotiations.
Sterling Heights Police Crisis Negotiation Team convinced the suspect to drop his handgun and leave the home after “hours of negotiations” and took him into custody, investigators said.
Police did not say when the suspect was arrested— only that it happened “within 12 hours” of the shooting.
The victim’s name, age and city of residence were not released. No information was provided about the circumstances leading up to the shooting; or the relationship between the suspect and the victim, if any.
Charges are expected within the next couple days, police said.
Anyone with information on the fatal shooting is asked to call Sterling
Heights Police Department Investigations Bureau at 586-446-2825.
