HARPER WOODS (WWJ) -- Harper Woods police are investigating a shooting that led to lockdowns at several schools and a warning to area residents to shelter in place.
At around 8 a.m. Thursday, police said a woman was found shot inside a car near Kelly Rd. and Woodland. However, it was determined, police said, that the shooting actually happened a few blocks away.
Police searched a home for the suspect, but didn't find the person.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
Meanwhile, Harper Woods police sent an alert to residents in the area about the incident, urging people to stay inside their homes until police were "satisfied the situation has been resolved."
Police said they were searching for a suspect who managed to flee the area. Authorities reiterated that the shooting did not happen at or have anything to do with local schools, who were asked to go into lockdown as a precaution.
"False information is being spread that this incident is school-related," police said in a statement. "Locking down schools for an incident occurring nearby is standard procedure."
The lockdowns were listed several hours later.
As for the shooting, police said the shooter and victim knew each other, but a motive hasn't been released.
As the investigation continues, anyone with information about this case can call Harper Woods Police at 313-343-2530.
