Sleeping 7-year-old boy shot in the head in Detroit drive-by

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A young child was rushed to a hospital after he was shot in the head while asleep inside his east side Detroit home overnight.

According to police, this was a drive-by shooting, sometime before 5 a.m. Monday, on Fairmount, in the area of 8 Mile and Kelly roads.

Briefing WWJ's Charlie Langton and other reporters, Detroit Police Chief James White said a 7-year-old boy was sleeping in a front room of the home, when shots were fired by someone outside.

The child was taken to a hospital where Langton said he was being treated, but was expected to survive.

"We believe that the bullet is still in the child's head," Langton said. "He may have to have surgery, so it's still a little touch-and-go at this point in time."

Meanwhile, police are still searching for what is believed to be two shooters, still on the run later in the morning.

At the time, Langton said police believe that this was a targeted shooting -- with the target being an adult who lives in the home -- and that it may be gang-related.

Police said there were 11 people inside the home at the time of the shooting, and eight of them were children.

There is no desciption of any suspects at the time, at the investigation is ongoing.
