Slick roadways cause multiple crashes, traffic mess on I-94 in Macomb County

HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Multiple crashes due to slippery road conditions on I-94 in Macomb County have created significant back ups and travel headaches for drivers on their Wednesday morning commute.

WWJ's Charlie Langton said several crashes on the westbound lanes of I-94 near Shook Rd. have traffic backed up for miles after Metro Detroit saw their first accumulating snowfall on Tuesday and temperatures flirted with freezing overnight.

"I'm looking at tow trucks, I'm looking at police cars and I'm looking at a lot of backed up cars on this likely slippery roadway," Langton reported. "I was taking the eastbound I-94 and yes, it was a little bit slippery and I got off the highway."

Langton said while it does appear authorities seem to be making progress clearing the crashes, only one lane is open.

"The back-up is for miles," Langton said of the traffic. "If you're heading into Detroit from Macomb County, expect long delays and be careful on the roads."

Much of Wednesday is forecasted to stay in the 30s, with a high expected to reach 39. Conditions are said to remain cloudy, according to AccuWeather, with a chance of snow showers throughout the day.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said brief pockets of blinding snow are possible and drivers should be aware of poor visibility and slick spots.

Some amounts of accumulating snow is forecasted to dust areas north of I-69.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Sanilac County through midnight tonight. Flurries are expected to bring another 1 to 3 inches of snow throughout the day, experts say.

A second front is set to blow through the state on Thursday, bringing yet another round of scattered snow showers before dry condition and frigid temperatures set in for the weekend.

DeVore warned temperatures will make November feel more like January as the region won't make it out of the 20s with lows dipping down into the teens.
