DETROIT (WWJ) -- Drivers were urged to avoid a stretch of the Lodge Freeway, late Monday afternoon, due to a serious crash reportedly involving several cars.

Southbound M-10, The Lodge, was completed closed at W. Chicago Rd. following the crash at Pallister, near Henry Ford Hospital in Midtown Detroit.

WWJ's Scott Ryan reported traffic backups to the M-8, the Davision Freeway, just as the afternoon commute was getting underway.

Tipster "Nathan" calling the WWJ Newsroom said the crash involved four or five vehicles. He said one of the cars had its roof ripped off.

There were multiple ambulances on the scene, but there is no information about injuries at this time.

MDOT confirmed that the closure is due to a crash, but there were no immediate details from police about what happened.

As of 5:30 p.m., all southbound lanes of The Lodge were closed at W. Chicago.

To get around it, drivers can exit at W. Chicago and take the M-10 Service Drive. Or, for those trying to get to downtown, Ryan suggests taking I-96.
