ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - A Warren man is dead after troopers said he rammed into the back of county truck on I-696 in Macomb County on Saturday morning — and then another vehicle crashed into him.
The westbound lanes of I-696 were closed for several hours after Michigan State Police said troopers were called out to a three-vehicle crash just after 9 a.m. in near Gratiot in Roseville.
State police determined through a preliminary investigation that the at-fault driver, identified as a 56-year-old man from Warren, was speeding behind the wheel of a pick-up in the left lane when he was unable to stop for the vehicle in front of him.
The man ended up ramming into the back of a county road truck that was pulling a trailer, MSP stated, and his pick up came to a stop in the right lane when another vehicle slammed into him.
The 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is an example of the worst thing that can happen when drivers can not control their vehicle when driving at excessive speeds” F/Lt Mike Shaw, MSP PIO, said in an update to social media. “While we are lucky no one else was hurt, there is now a family missing a loved one today. Just slow down!”
Authorities remained at the scene for most of Saturday morning. Drivers were encouraged to find alternative routes as trooped continued to investigate into the fatal crash.
No other injures were reported.
