FARMINGTON (WWJ) - Students and faculty at Farmington High School barricaded themselves in classrooms and blocked interior doors as a large police presence converged on the building on Wednesday morning.
But the Farmington Police Department told WWJ that the emergency response appears to be the fault of a "code error" at Farmington High School, located off 32000 Shiawassee, near Orchard Lake Road in Oakland County.
There is no imminent threat to the school or any of its occupants, authorities stated.
Police confirmed that the lockdown was "wrapping up" and the community will notice a very large police presence in the residential area. Police remains on scene just to ensure everyone is safe.
Concerns parents took to social media to share messages from loved ones inside the school, who said they were barricaded in rooms with the lights off.
"Students are all hiding in dark classrooms with stuff in front of the doors. Cops are there," one poster wrote.
Another parent said her children wrote saying that "it's business as usual in their rooms" and that they both felt safe.
Farmington Public Safety released a statement about the incident as follows:
Farmington High School went into a lockdown today during passing time between 2nd and 3rd hour. the PA system announced an automated lockdown and students responded promptly. At the time of the automated PA announcement, FHS administration did not know the source of the announcement. Farmington Public Safety was immediately dispatched to the Farmington High School. The exterior and interior building were searched and cleared by police. All students and staff remained in lockdown for the duration of the building search. For the safety of those in the building, police blocked off the surrounding streets and access points to Farmington High School during the search.
We are aware that there were rumors of a student being injured. These were only rumors, there were no injuries of staff or students. At this time, police and building administration are completing the final sweep and students will be released to their 4th hour class. We will continue to have increased police presence in the building for the remainder of the day.
