(WWJ) Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are pleading with Michiganders to get tested for COVID-19 after they return from Spring Break.

Students and families traveling across the state, out of the state or out of the country risk being exposed to the virus. “This in turn could fuel outbreaks within their households and the communities where they live or visit,” a press release from the Governor’s Office read.

The state is offering 37 pop-up sites located throughout Michigan as part of the special testing program.

About ten of them are in metro Detroit.

“Brighter days are ahead with vaccinations being available to all Michiganders as of April 5, however, there are still critical efforts we must take to slow the spread of COVID-19,” Governor Whitmer said in the release. “COVID-19 remains a threat to our families and communities, and we encourage Michiganders to get tested for COVID-19 and are making it easier through these additional testing pop-up sites throughout the state. As always, every Michigander has a personal responsibility to do their part by wearing a mask, washing hands and maintaining social distancing to help us slow the spread of this virus.”

MDHHS Director, Elizabeth Hertel, said the ideal time to get tested is one to three days before traveling. “Do not travel if you test positive. Check travel restrictions before leaving, especially information about the spread of new variants of COVID-19 where you intend on visiting,” Hertel said.

Health officials urge you to continue wear a mask over nose and mouth in public settings, avoid crowds and maintain social distancing of at least six feet from anyone they did not travel with. It is also suggested that they carry hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol in case washing your hands with soap and water is not readily available.

They also recommend anyone who traveled get tested three to five days after travel and self-quarantine until their test results are back.

This comes as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports 5,498 new cases in the past 24 hours. 20 more people who have tested positive for the virus have died. Just 2,600 adults are hospitalized with a confirmed case of the virus, with nearly 500 in the ICU and more than 231 on ventilators, according to MDHHS.

The MDHHS reports 569,460 are considered recovered after surviving 30 days since testing positive for the virus.

14.52% of the COVID-19 tests conducted statewide in the past 24 hours have come back positive.

According to the Michigan COVID Vaccine Dashboard, 21.5% of Michigan's population is fully vaccinated while just over 35% have received one or more dose of either of the three vaccines. For frequently asked questions about the vaccine, click here.

Per the dashboard, 67.5% of Michiganders of 65 and over are fully vaccinated; and between 50-55% of the same age group have received at least one vaccine.

In the 50 to 64 years age group, just over 18% are fully vaccinated while 42 percent have received at least one dose.
