Michigan State Police bust multiple drivers speeding at 100+ mph on I-96

(WWJ) Michigan State Police were out on motorcycles looking for speeding drivers on Tuesday, along I-96 at Joy Road in Detroit.

"It's one of our areas that's really known for excessive speed and also some of the shooting incidents that we have seen these past six, seven months or so," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw.

Shaw said officers with the MSP Motor Unit, with help from the Detroit Police Motor Unit, would be stopping speeders throughout the day — while also keeping an eye out for distracted driving, seat belt use and other violations.

Police started at around 9 a.m. using radar on an overpass for the operation they're calling "Motor City Wolfpack."

The first stop of the day, Shaw said, was a driver going 96 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Photos shared by MSP showed other drivers clocked at 95, 99, 101, 104, 114 and 115 mph.

By mid-afternoon, Shaw told WWJ's Sandra McNeill the worst violator was caught going a whopping 116 mph.

"The people that are driving that speed are usually our worst drivers out there," he said. "So they're not very good at driving anyways, let alone that speed."

Shaw said that despite news coverage and prior warning about this enforcement effort, troopers have been handing out plenty of tickets

"So, just be careful as you're heading out. Not just because we're out here, but because it's the right thing to do," Shaw said. "People have been needlessly dying on our area freeways through excessive speed, not wearing seat belts, alcohol and marijuana impaired driving. So this is one of the ways that we look to stop those needless deaths and hopefully get people to slow down and take traffic safety more seriously."

He added: "Unfortunately, I think we're going to be pretty busy today."
