(WWJ) More people are needed to work the polls this November.
The statewide Support MI Clerks campaign is kicking off its fall recruitment effort, aiming to help local city and township clerks fill temporary poll worker positions. Officials say the need is greater this year because Michigan now requires nine days of early voting, on top of absentee and Election Day voting.
"Well-trained poll workers are essential to ensuring our elections run smoothly. We cannot run our elections without their assistance," said Dan Papineau, Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. "The Support MI Clerks program helps community members understand the important role they can play in supporting accessible elections by registering to become poll workers."
Support MI Clerks works to recruit new poll workers by delivering educational presentations to organizations across the state, including chambers of commerce, Rotary clubs, corporations, libraries, and other community groups.
The presentations provide information about Michigan’s election process that is strictly fact-based, explain the general responsibilities and benefits of serving as a poll worker, and help residents learn how to sign up in their local community.
