Stellantis announces $83 million investment in Dundee Engine Complex to produce hybrid engines

DUNDEE (WWJ) - Stellantis plans to invest $99 million in three plants in North America, with the bulk of the funds going to Dundee Engine Complex in Michigan, the automaker announced on Monday.

The Michigan plant will be overhauled to produce a new four-cylinder engine for two of the company's future hybrid-electric vehicles, the Dutch-based company said.

According to Stellantis' release, $14 million in funding will go to Kokomo Casting Plant in Indiana and the Etobicoke Casting in Toronto will receive $2 million.

Govenor Gretchen Witmer called the investment from Stellantis a "win" for Michigan as the deal secures the state's place in the future of hybrid and EV production.

“We will build on our auto industry leadership, creating jobs and ushering in a sustainable transportation future by leveraging our innovation and talent," Whitmer said in a press release. "We appreciate our long-standing and continued partnership with Stellantis. Together, we will build on investments like today’s at the Dundee Engine Complex and the historic investment in 2019 to bring the first auto assembly plant to Detroit in 30 years."

According to Whitmer, more than 25,000 jobs within the automotive sector have been announced in Michigan since 2019.

In addition to Stellantis' latest announcement, other mobility-related investments recently made in Michigan complied by the governor's office are as follows:

• Automaker Ford Motor Company investing $2 billion, creating more than 3,200 jobs in plants across Michigan to support EV manufacturing growth and secure internal combustion engine operations in the state.

• Automoti ve manufacturer General Motors investing $7 billion, creating 4,000 and retaining 1,000 jobs, to convert Orion Township assembly plant to build full-size EV pickups and build Ultium’s third U.S. battery cell plant in Lansing.

• High-tech auto electronics manufacturer Gentex investing $300 million, creating more that 500 jobs in West Michigan. Canadian EV charging network operator and smart charging solutions provider FLO investing $3 million and creating 133 jobs at its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills.

• ATESTEO North America, global provider of testing services for EV drivetrains and components, establishing its North American headquarters in East Lansing, investing $27.8 million and creating 46 well-paying jobs.
