STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- Residents have cleaned up the graffiti in a Sterling Heights neighborhood, but two young men are now are awaiting charges allegedly for painting offensive words and symbols on a fence.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reports the two suspects — both said to be 19 years old and from out-of-state — allegedly spray-painted swastikas and sayings like "Fight Jewish control" on a fence at a home in the 11000 block of Shetland Court, in the area of M-53 and Canal Rd. Langton said Sterling Heights police were able to track down and arrest two suspects; one of them from Idaho, the other from South Carolina.
The motive for the vandalism is unknown, but police reportedly found paint, knives and marijuana when they took thge pair into custody, Langton said.
Police have submitted the findings to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, and a determination will be made as to what charges, if any, the two will face in Sterling Heights.
The Sterling Heights Police Department said in a statement:
"The Sterling Heights Police Department takes all reports of hate crimes and bias-motivated incidents very seriously and is dedicated to thoroughly investigating these incidents, holding offenders accountable under the law, and working closely with victims and community partners throughout the process."
The suspects' names have not been released.
