
WARREN (WWJ) -- Investigators are working to determine what led to a deadly, single-car crash on I-696 in Macomb County over the weekend.
It happened at around 5:25 a.m. Sunday along westbound I-696 near Dequindre Rd. in Warren, according to Michigan State Police.
A premiminatly investigation found the driver of a 2022 Kia Sportage hit a construction sign on the left shoulder of freeway, before hitting the wall and crossing all lanes. He then crashed into the opposite wall and rolled over.
The driver was identified as a 51-year-old man from Sterling Heights, police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said, Monday morning, troopers were waiting on medical examiners reports to determine whether the driver was drunk, or if there was a medical emergency.
The man's name was not released. No one else was injured.
