STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) – Seniors in Sterling Heights are getting a new place to stay fit.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department recently unveiled a new 50+ Outdoor Fitness Park at the Sterling Heights Senior Center on Utica Road.

Exclusively available for people aged 50 and older, the park “aims to inspire individuals of all fitness levels to lead active and balanced lifestyles. The unique concept “combines the best of physical fitness and the great outdoors,” officials say.

It will give the Sterling Heights 50+ community the chance to enjoy Michigan’s three seasons and socialize more, all while staying active.

The outdoor park will feature nine workout machines – five of which can be used while seated in a wheelchair – and provide “all the physical benefits of indoor exercise through a range of equipment that supports cardiovascular health, muscle strength, balance and flexibility.”

“There are machines that focus on cardio fitness and several that help with strength training. The addition of machines that are wheelchair accessible make it an inclusive space to help all our patrons age well,” said Kristen Briggs, Sterling Height Recreation Superintendent.

The project was funded through the Community Development Block Grant CARES Act.

"The city of Sterling Heights is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals within our community at every age,” said Mayor Michael Taylor. “Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation continues to provide opportunities that leverage our surroundings to motivate us to pursue a healthier and happier lifestyle.”

Yearly membership passes give full access to all drop-in programs and amenities at no additional charge. The cost is $16 per resident, $32 for non-resident.
