EASTPOINTE (WWJ) - Macomb County officials are warning families against a strange man who approached a child as they were walking home from school and offered sweets this week.
Eastpointe police said the incident happened between 3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday (March 19) in the area of David and Ego in the City of Eastpointe.
According to authorities, a man approached the child as they were walking home after school and offered them candy.
The child ignored the man. He reportedly reached for an unknown object and approached again, but the child walked away.
The man left the area in a full-sized white paneled van.
The police were notified of the incident and are now asking the public for any information that can help their investigation.
The man is described as white and between the ages of 50 and 60. He was about 6 feet to 6 feet, 2 inches tall.
The incident comes a month after residents in neighboring Roseville were put on high alert when an elementary school child was approached by an unknown man and offered candy and playtime with his grandchild on their way to school.
Police set up patrols in the area where the child was approached, roughly a mile between Joseph G. Elementary Schools and Fountain Elementary School.
The Bloomfield Township Police Department said they were made aware of another similar report when two middle school aged students were approached by a strange man while walking home from the bus stop on Feb. 14.
The children were in the area of Peabody Drive and Tall Oaks Road around 3:45 p.m. when a suspicious vehicle approached them.
The male driver pulled up next to the children and asked if either of them had a phone. The students felt uncomfortable and ran home without speaking to the man. They told their parents what happened, who then contacted authorities.
