TROY (WWJ) -- A 19-year-old Troy man faces possible jail time after police say he crashed his car into power pole while driving drunk.

According to Troy Police, the driver was arrested at the scene, on Rochester Rd. at E. Square Lake Rd., early in the morning of Saturday, Nov. 30.

Just before 4 a.m., a witness called 911 to report a single-vehicle crash into a pole that was now on fire.

Police said officers arrived to find a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek on fire, and a power pole split in half.

When the driver, who had already gotten out of the car, spoke with officers, they noticed a smell of alcohol, police said,

The driver was asked to perform several sobriety evaluations, but failed the test.

A breathalyzer test then showed the driver's BAC (blood alcohol concentration) was .194%, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive under Michigan law.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Troy Police lock-up, where a Chemical Breath Test showed results .241% and .234%. Police said the driver was issued a citation for Operating with a Blood Alcohol Level of .17 or More.

Under Michigan's "Super Drunk Laws," drivers with a BAC more than twice the state's legal limit of .08% face stiffer penalties, including up to 180 days in jail if convicted as charged.
