TROY (WWJ) -- A Macomb County woman could spend half-a-year in jail after police say she drove super drunk before falling asleep behind the wheel in Oakland County.
The driver, identified as a 33-year-old Sterling Heights resident, was arrested the morning of Monday, Sept. 11, after police found her parked outside a business in the 2300 block of John R Road in Troy.
At around 5:10 a.m., police said they got a call about the driver of a 2022 Ford Explorer who appeared to be falling asleep while driving.
Witnesses said the woman was driving in the center lane and into oncoming traffic on John R, near Wattles Road, before pulling over into a parking lot.
When officers arrived, they said they found the driver "slumped over the steering wheel."
When she spoke with officers, they said her speech was slurred and there was a smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle.
The driver was asked to perform some sobriety evaluations, but officers had to call off the test when "it was determined to be a safety risk to the driver due to her level of intoxication," according to the police report.
The woman then submitted to a preliminary breath test with a result of .329% BAC (blood alcohol concentration) — which is four times the legal limit to drive in Michigan.
The woman was arrested and taken to the Troy Police Lock-Up where police said a chemical breath test showed results of .305% and .293% BAC. The case was then forwarded to the Detective Bureau for appropriate warrants. Her name was not released.
Under Michigan's "Super Drunk Laws," drivers with a BAC more than twice the state's legal limit of .08% face stiffer penalties, including up to 180 days in jail if convicted.
