(WWJ) – A 27-year-old Alma man is behind bars after he allegedly led Michigan State Police on a chase following an attempted carjacking Sunday.
Troopers from the MSP Gaylord Post were called out around 7:15 p.m. to a gas station in Waters – about 10 miles south of Gaylord – where the suspect had allegedly tried to steal someone's car.
The suspect tried to carjack a CPL holder, but the victim "displayed his firearm" and the suspect fled, according to MSP.
But a short time later the suspect found an unlocked GMC pickup truck in the parking lot, unlocked with the keys inside. He stole the truck and sped away, while the owner called 911.
Troopers spotted the truck more than 30 miles north on I-75 south of Indian River. The trooper followed the truck until an officer from the Tuscarora Police Department took position behind him.
When the trooper activated his emergency lights and siren, the truck didn't stop and a pursuit ensued.
An officer from the Mackinaw City Police Department deployed stop sticks in an inactive construction zone on I-75 near Hebron Town Hall Road and deputies from the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Office joined the chase.
The chase continued until the trooper performed a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver and the stolen vehicle was disabled.
The suspect was arrested and held at the Otsego County Jail. His name has not been released, pending arraignment.
He will be charged with one count each of attempted carjacking, unlawful driving away of a vehicle and a habitual offender fourth offense notice. MSP officials say he'll face additional charged of fleeing and eluding in Cheboygan County.
