SCIO TWP. (WWJ) — A suspect is in custody after allegedly stealing a fire truck in Washtenaw County on Valentine’s Day.

It all unfolded around 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, according to the Scio Township Fire Department.

Firefighters were on a detail when they noticed someone got into one of the department’s engines and drove it away.

Firefighters “immediately recognized the engine was being stolen and reported it to police.”

Authorities quickly located the truck headed east on Jackson Avenue heading into the city of Ann Arbor and officers with the Ann Arbor Police Department and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office were called.

An Ann Arbor police officer ultimately stopped the fire truck in the area of Jackson and Lakeview Drive and detained the suspect, who was turned over to the sheriff’s office.

While authorities are still evaluating the truck for damage or missing equipment, the fire department says it initially appeared there was no damage and nothing was stolen.

Authorities have not identified the suspect and officials said “the investigation into the circumstances that allowed this to occur is ongoing.”

It was not immediately clear what charges the suspect may face.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
