(WWJ) A 9-hour stand-off with Warren Police ended with the fatal shooting of the suspect.

Police said officers were called to the Lancaster Woods Condominiums near 12 Mile and Hayes around 10 p.m. Friday on reports of shots fired. Officers tried to negotiate with the barricaded man throughout the night and into the wee hours of the morning.

"Negotiations failed," Police Commissioner, Bill Dwyer, spoke live on WWJ. "The person actually, at around 7:25 a.m., set fire to his apartment. He then jumped from his second-floor window with a 9-millimeter weapon in his hands. The officers in the rear of the complex were confronted with the suspect pointing the weapon at them."

Dwyer said the officers ordered him to drop the weapon "several times." When he did not comply, officers shot and killed him.

"They had to use deadly force," Dwyer told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

He said it's a decision that no officer wants to make.

"They're human," Dwyer said. "They go through hopefully an entire career without having to use deadly force. In a situation like this, we don't know what his intent was. We're not sure if it was suicide by cop."

Dwyer said the officers were able to talk to the suspect through his family, but he never surrendered.

WXYZ reports no hostages were in danger during the standoff. No other injuries are reported at this time.

An investigation is underway.
