BERLIN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - The police are investigating an attempted break-in that occurred early this morning.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said the attempted break-in occurred on the 9000 block of Olde Hickory Lane at Dec. 4 at 1:19 a.m.

An early investigation found that the homeowner woke up to sounds of banging on the front door. The suspect spit in his face when the homeowner opened the door, then began to kick and push his way inside. The homeowner was able to prevent the suspect from getting into the house.

While walking away from the house, the suspect slashed the tires on the homeowner's vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, police said.

The incident was recorded by the home's doorbell camera.

Police said they found the suspect walking in the road near the home. When police attempted to arrest him, the suspect became "combative" and resisted.

The police found a "large fixed-blade knife" on the suspect when they searched him.

The suspect has been identified as a 27-year-old Monroe man. He is being held at the Monroe County Jail for attempted home invasion, resisting arrest, malicious destruction of property and carrying a concealed weapon, authorities said.

The suspect will not be identified publicly until his arraignment in the First District Court, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-240-7534.
