Suspected drunk driver arrested after fatally striking 61-year-old man at crosswalk in Hazel Park

A female driver was taken into police custody after she allegedly hit a man walking across the street at a pedestrian crossing in Hazel Park Friday afternoon.

OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - A female driver was taken into police custody after she allegedly hit a man walking across the street at a pedestrian crossing in Hazel Park Friday afternoon, WDIV reported.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash, which occurred just before 5 p.m. on March 18.

According to Hazel Park police, the victim, a 61-year-old man, was crossing Brickley Ave. at John R Road when the female driver of a Ford Explorer ran into the man.

Police said the woman had stopped for a stop sign at the intersection, but when she accelerated from the stop, she struck the man who was crossing in front of her.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where died of his injuries, police confirmed.

The woman was arrested by police and is currently pending formal charges.

The identity of the female driver and the victim have not been released.
