CANTON (WWJ) - A 56-year-old man is dead after an alleged drunk driver struck him as he was crossing the street in Canton on Monday evening, officials said.
Authorities with the Canton Public Safety Department said police responded to the area of Michigan Ave. and I-275 around 8:45 p.m. on Oct. 4 for a reported crash involving a car and a pedestrian.
Police said a 56-year-old Wayne resident was hit by the oncoming car as he was walking across the eastbound lanes of Michigan Ave.
The crash killed the man instantly, WDIV reported.
Authorities said the driver involved in the crash returned to the scene. Alcohol does appear to have played a role in the incident and the driver was taken into custody.
The eastbound lanes of Michigan Ave. between I-275 and Hannan Road were closed as officials investigated the crash.
All lanes have since been reopened.
Canton Township police Lieutenant Michael Kennedy told WDIV that they were working on identifying the victim.
