Serious crash involving suspected drunk driver sends car over Mound Road median in Sterling Heights, 3 people injured: cops

Mound has reopened at the scene after nearly 8-hour closure

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- Three people are hospitalized after a crash along Mound Road in Sterling Heights, early Monday morning.

According to Sterling Heights Police, a suspected drunk driver was headed northbound on Mound, at around 2:30 a.m., when he collided with a car at 18 Mile Road.

Sterling Heights Police Capt. Mario Bastianelli told reporters that, along with alcohol, investigators believe speed was a factor.

Video by WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton shows a crushed car on the scene.

"That just shows you the collision was obviously pretty extreme," Bastianelli said. "Obviously, it sent the vehicle back over the median and into the southbound lanes of Mound."

The suspected drunk driver -- a 48-year-old Sterling Heights man -- and his passenger were injured, as well as the Detroit man who was driving the other car involved.

All three people were taken to a local hospital where they were listed in serious, but stable condition.

"So as of right now, everyone appears that they're going to survive. But it just appears to be serious injuries," Bastianelli said.

Mound was closed at the scene for about eight hours, but all lanes have since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing. No names have been released.
