CANTON (WWJ) - Troopers said a driver that believed he had been shot while driving on I-275 in Canton actually encountered road debris that went through his windshield on Thursday morning.
Michigan State Police said they concluded their investigation just before 9:15 a.m., opening a previously closed section on northbound I-275 at Michigan Ave.
According to troopers, a truck driver called 911 around 5 a.m. and said he thought he had been shot at while driving on the freeway. The caller stated he believed a bullet went through his windshield, shattering the glass.
MSP responded to the scene and closed the northbound lanes of I-275 in Canton, preforming an evidence sweep with canine units.
Despite their efforts, no evidence of a shooting was found.
"A MSP Evidence Technician was contacted and when they arrived on scene it was determined the hole in the windshield was caused by road debris," troopers added.
The truck driver sustained minor lacerations from the windshield glass in the incident. He refused medical treatment by EMS at the scene.
The incident on I-275 wasn't the only traffic issue in the area for drivers as they started their morning commute. Westbound I-94 at Telegraph in Allen Park and the Dearborn Heights area, heading to the airport, only had two lanes open as crews worked to clean up the scene of an earlier semi truck fire.
