NOVI (WWJ) – Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi was evacuated Wednesday afternoon as officials investigated a possible gas leak.

Novi Fire Department officials tell WWJ the mall – near 12 Mile and Novi Roads – was evacuated after multiple people inside the mall reported feeling light headed.

Crews checked the mall with gas meters, but found nothing of concern.

Officials said around 3:30 p.m. people were being let back into the mall.

Kristin Coury, an employee at the Kendra Scott jewelry store, told WWJ's Sandra McNeill she didn't know what to think when an announcement came on over the mall speakers.

"Definitely scared. We grabbed stuff as quickly as we could. We didn't know -- all we heard was 'evacuate' and we just got out of there and looked around," she said.

While it was determined to be a false alarm, Coury says her store and some others inside the mall closed for the remainder of the day.

Police closed northbound Novi at West Oaks Drive due to a crash around the same time, but it did not appear that the incidents were related.

Officials have not released any other information at this time.
