SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) -- A man identified by the FBI as a suspected MS-13 gang member has been arrested in Shelby Township, and turned over to federal authorities.

Details of the incident were released by the Shelby Township Police Department, whose officers pulled the suspect over at W. Utica Rd. and Dequindre Rd., shortly after noon last Friday.

During the traffic stop, police said the the driver — identified as Walter Ceron Linares — presented an El Salvadorian ID card.

Police ran a records check through dispatch, and identified Linares, as a possible member of a terrorist organization, with instructions to contact the FBI.

Officers called the FBI, which confirmed that Linares was a suspected MS-13 gang member currently on their terrorist watch list, according to police.

Linares was then taken into custody without incident and held until the U.S. Border Patrol arrived on scene.

Border Patrol agents confirmed Linares’ identity and status as a "dangerous MS-13 gang member," police said, and he was turned over to Border Patrol for federal processing.

“Our top priority is keeping Shelby Township safe," said Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide," in a statement. "We work every day to identify and stop individuals involved in violent crime, organized criminal activity, or any threat of terrorism before it reaches our community. Through proactive policing, strong partnerships with state and federal agencies, and constant vigilance, we remain committed to ensuring that those who intend to harm others will find no place to operate in Shelby Township. Our goal is to keep Shelby Township safe; our residents deserve nothing less!"
