DETROIT (WWJ) — A group of four suspects are on the run after allegedly using a U-Haul truck to smash into the back of a Detroit marijuana dispensary early Wednesday morning.

It happened at the Jazz Cannabis Club around 4:15 a.m. on Dec. 18 in the area of Telegraph and McNichols on the city’s west side.

While the suspects used the truck to smash into the back of the building, owner George Birkho told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Charlie Langton it doesn’t appear they took anything.

Still, the back of the building was heavily damaged, with video from the scene showing two large holes in the exterior wall.

Birkho says, “fortunately,” Detroit police officers responded to the scene “within a matter of four, five minutes.”

Langton reported police are searching for four suspects allegedly involved in the incident, but no description of the suspects has been released.

Birkho said it was “very, very frustrating” that he had to leave home around 4 a.m. and drive 20 minutes to the business, “trying to save and salvage and do as much damage control as possible.”

He also said this is the second time the Jazz Cannabis Club has been targeted.

“It’s pretty frustrating. We’re all trying to make it, the economy’s pretty rough right now. People are trying to make ends meet, and for us to sustain this kind of damage really hurts the small business owners,” Birkho said.

He told Langton he doesn’t plan on filing an insurance claim.

“You don’t wanna make an insurance claim. Insurance is crazy high, as we all know. We’re barely making it. The economy’s bad, inflation is up, the cost of everything is up… for me to make a claim, it’s gonna raise my insurance, so I’m just better off fixing it myself,” Birkho said.

Detroit police officials have not released any further details about the break-in.
