DETROIT (WWJ) -- A senseless act of violence. That's what Detroit city officials are calling the deadly shooting of a teenage girl on the city's east side.
It happened at 7 p.m. Tuesday on Chalmers, near Alter and Mack.
Investigators said the suspects opened fire on a car with four people inside.
Responding officers found a 16-year-old girl who's been shot multiple times. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A 19-year-old was also wounded in the shooting, police said. He was taken to a hospital where his condition is unknown at this time
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison says his detectives will identify the person, or people, responsible for this shooting.
"The one who did this senseless act, this drive-by shooting, fired multiple shots into a vehicle, not even knowing who's in the vehicle, not caring. We're going to throw the book at them," Bettison said.
"We will relentlessly utilize out technology to pursue the perpetrators of this crime. I'm confident that we'll be able to identify them, locate them, and bring the to justice," the chief said. "Just tragic, tragic once again. And when they're apprehended, of course facing charge of homicide.. just senseless."
This marks the third shooting involving a minor in the city this week.
Bettison said his department will increase in uniformed officer patrols in response.
