GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A wildfire has burned about 400 acres in the Huron-Manistee Forest in Wexford County, northwest of Manton in northern Michigan.

Kerry Wieber of The Department of Natural Resources says the "Colfax Fire" started on private land on Tuesday afternoon and it's now about 60% contained.

Wieber tells WWJ's Beth Fisher that they evacuated around six square miles of homes in the area and that flames came very close to some structures, but residents were able to return to their homes last night.

More than a half dozen fire departments responded to the wildfire, with three planes dropping water on the forest to contain it. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated, though one fire official noted that the situation is "suspicious."
