VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A crash involving a semi-truck on I-275 in Van Buren Township left a Taylor man with "extensive injuries", police said.
In a statement on X, Michigan State Police Second District said the Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of a two-car crash near Tyler Road on the southbound side of the freeway on Saturday (11/2) at 10:45 a.m.
Their preliminary investigation revealed a Taylor man, 34, rear-ended the semi with his Mercedes Sprinter van. State Police said he was driving "at freeway speeds" while the semi was slowing down because of high traffic levels.
The van driver struck the windshield during the crash and suffered "extensive injuries" and damage to his legs, according to State Police. The Van Buren Fire Department extricated him from the vehicle and rushed him to a local hospital. His condition was not released.
Further investigation showed the man did not attempt to brake or slow down to accommodate the traffic congestion. State Police said he was "distracted," but did not elaborate further.
Police did not release any information on the driver of the semi.
Investigators closed the right two lanes of the freeway to investigate.
"It is important for drivers to remember that once they get behind the wheel, they only have one job." First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said in the statement. "Just drive."
