DETROIT (WWJ) -- Court proceedings in the murder of a 13-year-old boy in Detroit have been put on hold, while the alleged killer gets a mental evaluation.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Monday that the Preliminary Examination for 16-year-old Ryan Mcleod, which was initially set for Aug. 22, has been postponed.
Currently, prosecutors said, the defendant has been referred for evaluation as to his competency to stand trial, and his review date has been set for Nov. 20, 2022, before Judge Kenneth King.
Mcleod stands charged as an adult with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with a shooting last month, in the 8320 block of Homer Street in a Southwest Detroit neighborhood.
Just before 7 p.m. on July 26, police said the young victim was standing outside his home when Mcleod drove by and fired multiple shots.
Police said Mcleod and three teens who were with him fled the scene, but they were tracked down and arrested.
Detroit Police Department Commander of Major Crimes Michael McGinnis said the shooter and the victim knew each other, and that the two were involved dispute over an allegedly stolen cell phone.
At a news conference following McLeod's arrest, McGinnis told reporters the problem of kids with guns is "out of control" in Detroit, and he called on parents to "help us help them."
Along with the murder charge, Mcleod faces one count of felonious assault, and two counts of felony firearm.
He remains held in a juvenile detention facility.
