DETROIT (WWJ) An officer-involved shooting on Detroit’s east side leaves an 18-year-old man in critical condition, police said.
Detroit Police said the shooting occurred during a traffic stop by the DPD Gang Unit at a McDonald’s drive-thru, on East Seven Mile at Gratiot, on Tuesday, October 21, around 10:00 p.m.
“The reason for the traffic stop was obscured license plates,” Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said.
Authorities said two women were inside the car. The young man was in the backseat. The women complied with the search, according to police.
“When officers went to remove the man from the vehicle, he resisted, became combative,” Bettison said.
Officers produced a taser, but it’s unclear if that was “effective,” according to Bettison.
“At that point, the male subject was able to break free, fled on foot. (He) produced a handgun, which has been recovered,” Bettison said. “One officer fired one shot.”
The bullet struck the man in the “upper body,” Bettison said.
The man was rushed to the hospital. At last check, he remains in critical condition.
