WARREN (WWJ) - EMS personnel were called to middle school in Warren on Monday after several students fell ill after eating edibles containing THC, district officials said.

In a letter to parents, Warren Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert D. Livernois said four students at Carter Middle School were sickened on Feb. 6 after eating THC cookies and gummies, prompting staff to call medics.

THC is the chemical found in weed that produces a high.

Livernois said the students who brought the edibles to school will face "severe discipline consequences."

"This is an important reminder for all of us to be aware of what our children may have access to at home, such as alcohol, tobacco, vape, or marijuana, all of which are illegal for them to use," the superintendent added. "Since marijuana became legal in Michigan, we have seen an increase in students vaping and eating edibles containing THC."

Livernois wrote that students now see marijuana use as "normal" and do not grasp the consequences or effects of it when used.

"Please take some time tonight to talk with your children," he urged parents.
