CHEBOYGAN, Mich. (WWJ) -- Photos shared on social media show billowing black smoke as firefighters battle a big blaze at the Tissue Depot in Northern Michigan's Cheboygan.
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, the Michigan State Police Seventh District said emergency crews were at the factory located on Main Street, between West Lincoln Ave. and Court Street, in downtown Cheboygan.
Several roads are closed with police and firefighters at the scene, and the public is being urged to avoid the area.
The City of Cheboygan posted to Facebook: "URGENT! Please avoid the downtown area near the Tissue Plant. Firefighters are working as fast as they can to put the fire out."
According to UpNorthLive, a witness said that the fire broke out in a warehouse on the west side of the main tissue plant.
It's not yet known what caused the fire, and no injuries have been reported.
At 4 p.m. this remained an active situation, with nearly a dozen fire departments across the area responding to fight the fire.
Meanwhile, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said it has temporarily closed the Cheboygan Lock and Dam in Cheboygan due to the fire at the Tissue Depot, which is just across from the facility.
The DNR said an announcement will be made when the lock reopens to the public.
