CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- A teenager in Puerto Rico has been charged with making a threat against a school in Metro Detroit.
According to Clinton Township Police, the charges stem from a threat that was made by phone from an unknown phone number to Chippewa Valley High School back on Monday, May 22.
Early that morning, before the start of first hour, police arrived on the scene and secured the school building. No danger was found, and no one was hurt.
Police said detectives with the Clinton Township Police Criminal Investigation Division then teamed up with federal partners from the FBI Macomb County Gangs and Violent Crimes Task Force, FBI Detroit and FBI San Juan to trace the threat back to an 18-year-old man in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The teen has been charged with one count of making a false report or threat of terrorism, a 20-year-felony.
The defendant's name is not being released at this time.
"The safety and security of our schools and children are paramount to our department and we will continue to pursue these cases with relentless resolve," police said, in a news release Friday. "The Clinton Township Police Department would like to extend a thank you to the respective FBI field offices and the Chippewa Valley School District for their assistance and cooperation during this case."
