Three people are dead following a freeway shooting in Detroit that happened for unknown reasons just after 10 p.m. on I-96 near Schaefer and Grand River.

Police say shots were fired from two cars in the express lanes.

The man who was driving one of the vehicles died while a female passenger who was shot later died at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the suspect in the second car emerged from the gunfire unscathed and ran onto the freeway -- where he was struck and killed.

Investigators are working to determine what sparked the shooting and fill in details including whether the people involved knew each other, where they lived and who they were.
