CANTON TWP. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in Canton into how a toddler got a hold of a gun, causing panic at a local daycare.
Canton Police say they got the report from a daycare center saying a toddler was in possession of a loaded firearm inside the building.
Officers arriving to the scene quickly to confiscate the gun without incident.
Following an investigation, one of the child's parents was arrested, police said.
The toddler did not fire the gun, there were no injuries, and police said there is no active threat to the public.
Police did not release the name of the daycare facility.
They said case remains under active investigation by the Canton Police Department’s Detective Bureau and will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
The name of the person in custody is also being withheld, pending any charges filed.
Under Michigan law (MCL 28.429), gun owners are required to keep unattended firearms stored in a locked container or disabled with a locking device whenever a minor is or is likely to be present on the premises. Failure to properly secure a firearm can result in criminal penalties—ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies — if a child obtains the weapon and displays it publicly, injures someone, or causes a fatal shooting.
