SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A Shelby Township woman is accused of abandoning her dog after she moved.
Local police performed a welfare check on 38-year-old Stacey Pollack in early March. Officers say they found a dog that was malnourished and severely underweight.
The Detroit Animal Welfare Group now has custody of the pup. Pollack was arraigned on one count of third degree animal torture and one misdemeanor, abandoning or cruelty of one animal. The torture charge carries a prison sentence of up to four years.
“As prosecutors, we are obligated to defend those who cannot defend themselves, including animals that rely entirely on human care for their well-being. Cruelty toward pets is not a trivial matter, it represents a profound breach of both the law and our collective ethical standards. My office will not tolerate such conduct and remains committed to holding accountable anyone who mistreats animals in their care,” said Macomb County Peter J. Lucido.
Pollack's bond was set at $10-thousand. If released, she must wear a steel-cuff tether and may not have any contact with animals that could be considered pets.
Pollack is scheduled for a Probable Cause Conference in Shelby Township District Court on Tuesday, April 28.
